In a country criss-crossed by rivers, water scarcity sounds like a contradiction — until you look at who controls the tap, and when.
Bangladesh is one of the most water-abundant countries on earth by rainfall and river volume, which makes it easy to assume water scarcity isn't a local problem. On the ground, the reality is more complicated: abundance in the monsoon, followed by a dry season where shallow wells run low, surface water turns saline near the coast, and irrigation demand for a second or third rice crop outpaces what's actually available.
Community-level conservation, it turns out, does not require dramatic infrastructure to make a measurable difference. Simple interventions — repairing leaking hand-pump seals, lining irrigation channels to cut seepage losses, staggering planting schedules across a cooperative — routinely cut a village's dry-season water stress by a third or more, at a fraction of the cost of a new deep tube well.

Rainwater harvesting is the intervention SSEAFA has scaled the fastest. A simple rooftop catchment and storage tank can supply a family's drinking water needs through several dry-season months without drawing on increasingly saline groundwater. Multiplied across a cooperative, shared harvesting systems have let entire hamlets skip the worst weeks of the pre-monsoon water crunch entirely.
The throughline across every water project is the same one that runs through SSEAFA's forest work: protecting the source matters as much as managing the demand. Watershed restoration upstream — fencing riverbanks, restoring riparian tree cover, halting erosion — keeps dry-season river flow higher and cleaner than any downstream conservation measure can achieve alone.
